I wouldn't be 'AFRAID' to do it but you have to have a plan and understand what the color will do.
This is no different than doing a grey scale piece and adding candy color.
So its a bit of work but you will never now how it will/could look UNLESS you try.
I don't think it will mud up at all if your grey colors are correctly mixed.

I would leave the b/w pic alone....can't see how you can lighten it without creating a lot of mess to sort out.
If you want to do a colour version then start from scratch.
I use thinned raw sienna to build up the structure then add darker tones with thinned burnt umber.
I did this portrait howto several years ago but you might get something from it

Thanks Sam, thats a useful little tutorial that *bookmarks it*.
Cheers everyone, you are all :star: s
Im gonna try to add colour and like Kat said, you dont know unless you try. Ive always been a big believer of that.

The background is going to have a few bits of tattoo flash so down the left side i want to do an oriental dragon, the right side will have a tiger, top will have a swirly banner with the shops name on it in swirly script and at the bottom im thinking a heart with wings. Im hoping i can do the colours like Jaime rodriguez's work...

Svee if I was trying to get the vibrancy of Jamie's colours , I'd use HOK candys

This has been on the back burner for a while now but the time has come to get it finished.
Spent yesterday working the face again as she looked a bit like Noel Edmonds lol. Also added a little more orange, brown and even a ickle blue to the flesh tone.

Today was spent sketching out the background. More soon :)
