Just had a visit from the chap who ownes the David Mann harley and hes a bit worried (me too now).

The tank has started showing what can only be described as tiny little bits of dust or silvery hairs in places. they are only 2-4mm in length but they were not there until about a week ago and the paint job is a good 3 months old now.

Its only in a couple of places and in patches about the size of a tennis ball but he did say they seem to be getting worse with every buff/polish.

Apparently they show up the worst when under artificial light, when he popped round just now its a nice hot sunny day and i could hardly see them but i did see some of what he was talking aobut.

Anyone out there ever had this before or know what might be happening? the fenders and sides of the tank are fine, its just on the top of the tank. The fenders were cleared a couple of weeks before the tank though so i dont know if the clear could be an issue

God i dont want to paint that thing again... i just cant afford it

Is it in the clear Svee? Has he spilt any fuel on it?

Personally - I'd tell him to jog on!!

You did that job for peanuts and that means he can't come back and winge if there is the slightest of specs of dust in it.

It could be something that he has put on it - what clear did you use?

I know certain clears which specifically say not to use certain chemicals on them within a certain time frame - considering how well polished the rest of the bike it it could be that!?

I'd give Dave a call and see if he has any ideas bud!?

Stu ;)

I wonder if he has used something too abrasive, and put marks in it? If they are on the top of the clear, I would guess that. If they are in the clear (underneath) Then I guess that is a problem. I am sure Dave will throw some light on it.

Sounds like calcium crystallization...have heard of this with waterbased paints....
Fraser had a big spread on it over at KKL forum...I guessed it right because to me, looked like what kidney stone crystals look like...some dude showed a pic. They develop a bloom effect. happens when the moisture doesn't totally dry out and then develops under the clear. Can take months to develop.

I agree with Kat, just spoke to a friend of mine in Florida who is an ab artist and he mentoned calcium crystalisation too.

Who here reduces their waterbased paints with water from the tap?
I was told the best thing to use other than specific ab mediums like createx etc is de-ionised water (the stuff you top car batteries up with) as it has had all the minerals removed. Oddly enough, the next best thing is water from a Brita filter

Oh crap! Mind you, i dont think i used any water on that for reducing... i cant be sure though... i used to use tap water, been using 4011 though recently but like i say i cant be sure.

Shit i hope it doesnt get any worse, that would be a sand off and re-paint job and i dont have the time or the money for that.

Thanks Kat, Guns. I had never heard of calcium crystalisation, didnt even know using tap water could be an issue

Hard water here in the south mate.
I have to admit until you posted about it it was new to me too which is why I asked my mate about it.
It is not common, but does happen apparently.
Not a whole lot you can do about it mate except cross your fingers.
Maybe, if it gets worse you could have someone polish it right back to paint, tricky but do-able then re-clear. Even that is no guarantee that it won't come back though :o

Same thing from the guys who do my clear coating - how soon did Dave clear it after you finished painting it bud!?

I know it was a rush job but did it go straight to Dave after you put your brush down? :(
