A few pointers to remember when shooting HOK Jeff: Strain your paint and don't be worried about over-thinning (reducing). You can always add some Intercoat Clear to make the paint more transparent, so let's take white BC as an example:

Usually the paint is mixed 2 parts paint to 1 part reducer and I prefer RU311 which is the Medium Reducer. I usually mix up the colours in the correct ratios and then, add that to a 1oz or (new) 4oz Empty Plastic Bottles and then I add more reducer and usually even a little more in the colour cup on the airbrush. Off-cuts of black or dark coloured vinyl are good to have near your work. Scotch them off a bit and use as test shooting for thinned paint.

If you find you may have over-thinned and it's too powdery it may not bind to the surface correctly. In this case you can add either SG100 to give the paint back some body while also helping to reduce opacity or, I used to use PPG 941 a LOT for this but recently PPG have for some reason changed the formula and it's different to what it used to be, I don't like it as much. It's very glossy straight off the gun and in tests Dave and I did at the paintshop recently, it didn't adhere so well as the older 941 so i dunno what the heck is going on there?

Anyways, after mixing your paints always remember to strain them into the plastic bottles because HOK has an awful habit of drying around the neck or tin lid and it's very easy to get a tiny particle (or BIG one for that matter!) in your airbrush and then clog-spit-scream! If you can't get mesh filters/strainers then grab a pair of your wife's, girlfriends, drag artist's (or yours ;)) tights, stretch that over the paint pot/bottle and strain!

I am always amazed at how thin you can reduce HOK, especially the white as it's very opaque. Solvent-based paint is SO different to water-based and it's just a case of practising and for goodness sake Jeff - WEAR A MASK!! ESPECIALLY when shooting KK's as they are nasty. We've even got masks on the website: FACEMASK so no damn excuses - OK! ;)

Any questions on HOK fire em off and I'll see what I can do. There seems to be some confusion on me not supporting HOK here as I said I was going water-based? Well, that's my personal choice at home in my own personal art studio (where I am in the vicinity of my kids etc) but in the paintshop with Dave and at the HOK demo booth etc I am happy to still shoot HOK and probably always will! Especially if I get my ass over to SEMA as I'll be on the HOK booth with Fraser! ;) :micron:
